Real women get model treatment in German magazine

brigitteThe Associated Press is reporting that German magazine, Brigitte, will be replacing their professional models with real women out of their readers’ pool.

BERLIN – Germany’s most popular women’s magazine announced Monday that it is banning professional models from its pages in favor of “real women” in an attempt to combat an unhealthy standard of rail-thin beauty that it says has alienated its readers. The editor-in-chief of Germany’s bimonthly Brigitte told reporters that, starting next year, the magazine will feature a mix of prominent women and regular readers in photo spreads for everything from beauty to fashion to fitness.

Andreas Lebert said the move is a response to readers increasingly saying that they are tired of seeing “protruding bones” from models who weigh far less than the average woman.

This is an interesting move as women have been complaining for years that the impossbly thin models not only don’t reflect reality, but put unnecessary pressure on women to match that standard. I certainly believe the standards of beauty in our world need to change. I am curious to see how this will play out. Models are professionals and the good ones earn their pay. I’m not sure a regular josie off the street can make the clothes look quite as good. But I’m all for opening up the model world to more sizes. Why is their no medium in the modeling world? Why the standard to be a zero (which is like a negative size!!!) or two to work in the industry and then have to be a size 12 to be considered plus size? What about sizes 4-10? Doesn’t make sense.

I’m not ubber thin and I’m quite happy with my body but I’ve watched other women (I was  a cheerleader in high school and college) struggle with severe body image issues that seem completely psychotic! If you are naturally thin, as many women in my family are, it’s not fair to be punished for the hand genetics dealt you any more than we want that for the larger end of the scale.

What do you think? Is this a good move? Will it have the desired affect? I wonder.
