Barbie geeks out as a computer engineer!

Mattel held a recent vote to select Barbie’s next profession. Geek girls everywhere went into full force to vote her as a computer engineer. Happily, we won! Now I think I’m going to buy my first Barbie! I must say that I love the binary code tee but those glasses are kind of wack. I mean, not all geeks wear glasses and those of us who do have better taste than that. I’m just saying!

She’s been an astronaut, rock star, dentist and veterinarian. And now Mattel’s (MAT) Barbie doll is going to be a computer engineer.Mattel put the selection of Barbie’s 125th career in the hands of online voters for the first time. The El Segundo, Calif.-based toy company conducted an online voting campaign and asked fans on Twitter and Facebook to help decide her next profession. More than half a million votes were cast.

Computer Engineer Barbie will debut in winter 2010. The company hopes the doll “inspires a new generation of girls to explore this important high-tech industry, which continues to grow and need future female leaders.”

To create an authentic look for techie Barbie, designers worked with the Society of Women Engineers and the National Academy of Engineering to develop the wardrobe and accessories for the doll. She wears a binary code patterned T-shirt and is equipped with the latest gadgets including a smart phone, Bluetooth headset and laptop travel bag.

“Computer Engineer Barbie is geek chic,” Mattel says. It announced the new Barbie Friday at the 2010 American International Toy Fair in New York City.

Although online voters chose computer engineer as Barbie’s next career, Mattel executives decided she didn’t have enough to do. So they’re coming out with News Anchor Barbie at the same time.
